Shipping by product weight with shipping zones

Built into your website is the capability to ship your orders and calculate the shipping price, based on the weight of the items purchased. You can elect to assign different shipping costs per country and even county if applicable to your circumstances.
In addition to applying weight based shipping, you can also charge a handling fee. This can be completely different for each country and or county to offer you further flexibility. The handling fee is assigned to the shipping total so it is not displayed as a handling fee for your clients to see.

Note: There are several steps to complete setting up this feature. It is recommended that you apply them in the order set out here to prevent confusion at a later date.
Login to your administration area. Click on the tab "Settings" and from this page click on the link "E-QCart Settings" which can be found under the sub-heading "Ecommerce".Find the setting "shipping cost by" pick the option "By item weight" , click the "submit" button to save your changes.
Now that you have enabled the "weight based" shipping option you will have to assign weights to all of your products. When adding or modifying a product you will be able to see a weight based box. Type the weight of the item into the box provided, click the "submit" button once you have finished.

Note: The weight value you enter can be anything you like. We recommend you reference 1kg as 1000 and half a kilogram as 500 so when setting up your shipping zones you have a standard to follow. You can learn more about administering a product from the "admin content" section of this site.
Now that you have assigned a weight to all of your products, the next step is to set up your shipping zones. These will later be assigned to each country and or county as required. To set up your shipping zones click on the tab "Orders" and then on the link "Shipping zones" which can be found under the sub-heading "orders".
When the "shipping zones" setting page loads you can opt to automatically set up; "UK parcel force zones" by clicking the "UK parcel force zones" button or by "manually" adding your own using the "add new" button.
If you have used the set UK parcel force zones, or already have set up zones before, find a zone from the list, click the "Modify" button next to the zone you wish to use. If you are adding your first zone click the button "add new".
When your zone administration page loads, type a name you wish to use and identify the zone in the box called "Shipping zone name". An example here can be "Zone 1 UK mainland" ; this is only shown within the admin area.
Within the Option title 1 box, type the name you want your clients to see. An example would be "2 - 4 day" or "next day" etc. You can set up to 3 shipping options within each zone.
Importantly, you need to assign a weight value and the associated cost you wish to charge your clients for this particular zone, in the relevant "Weight from" and "cost columns".
In the first weight from column, add your first weight value of 0.0001 or something close. You have to have at least one lowest starting point. Then, put the price you want to charge for this weight in the cost box. Repeat this until you have added all of your weights and prices.
You will end up with something similar to this;

In the above example we have said for zone 1 "2 - 4 day" that for an order weighing between 0.001 and 0.4999 we will charge £7.40 and between 0.500 through to 0.999 we are charging £ 8.99 and so on until we reach our last value which in this case is 10. Then from here if it is over 10 Kg charge £1.50 per 0.500 of weight.
So, if the order weight total came to 10.5 the system would charge £25.99 (for the weight 10) and then an additional £1.50 for the 0.500 that it has gone over.
When you have set up all of your weights and prices required for this zone, click the "submit" button and repeat the process for all of the zones you require.
The final step, is to assign these zones to each individual country or county. You can do this by clicking on the "Settings" tab, then click "Countries" which can be found under the sub- heading "Extras".
When the main "Countries and counties section loads" you will see a list of all the available countries you can use. These are spread across multiple pages, so you may have to navigate between pages to find the country you are looking to administer.
Click the button "modify" next to the country you wish to assign a zone to. Choose the zone you wish to assign from the drop down "Shipping Zone". Click the "submit" button to save your changes.
Repeat this process to assign zones to the countries you wish to ship to. You follow the same steps to assign zones to the counties of a country. An example is, you may wish to use a different zone for islands and highlands to a particular country.
